Yorkshire Scare Grounds - Primary Research.

For my primary research of the essay and to get more of a hands on feel at fear i decided to visit Yorkshire Scare Grounds with a friend, unfortunately we couldn't take video equipment in but i recored some footage outside of people being scared and also analysis mine and my friends visit.

So to begin with i noticed that we were all put into groups i think this was to make us feel safer as the grounds were quite big and also because they didn't want big queues, however i think this is also to give us some small form of control or at least think we do, it in fact was more difficult going in groups as if one person screamed the whole group did, also one pair had to go at the front and the back which are the worst places to be when live actors are chasing you around with chainsaws screaming at you "Your'e gonna die."
Next i noticed the effects they used they played on visibility using fog and darkness to completely limit and even take away full visibility, this for me was an awful experience as i went first through this zone, i found myself kicking my foot forward as if to protect myself from the unknown and i felt really on edge and paranoid about what was right in front of me even though most times nothing was there, i will definitely be using visibility as a tool in my game level.
Another effect they using was strobe lighting to utterly blind and confuse people, this i don't think i can fully recreate however i could create an illusion to confuse people and play tricks with there eyes.

We were talking through different zones walking at normal pace and one zone we were made to run whilst being chased by actors, they also had a lot of props to use against us such as sticks, chainsaws, knifes and they used these items slightly aggressive on us at times but it was all good fun, i think. The environment was also played on we went at night so it was dark which made the lighting work very well casting shadows that freaked visitors out, lightning is something i must focus on when creating my game level it is very important for the tone and style of the level, i think i may create a very dark level with torch lit in places but the main light source is a torch attached to the first player controller.

Overall attending the scare ground gave me valuable primary research and information it taught me techniques on how to scare which are used on large numbers of people, it included tips on psychological scares, technology ideas and even giving me a different thinking level as i am writing my dissertation and creating my practical, i think the best way to write about fear is to go out and experience it first hand.
Here are some pictures from scare fest at the end they used suspense of people thinking it was over whilst a man with a chainsaw hid behind a corner waiting for one last attack.
