I started by modelling the bases of the instruments and then creating smaller shapes for the parts in which stick out, i.e - the strings/tuners etc. When i was all done i freezed transformations and deleted history to keep everything neat and then combined and smoothed what was needed so that everything wouldn't move during animation. I'm happy with the new modelling skills i've picked up and they way now i look at shapes. As you can see i also messed around with texturing and blinns a little bit but i may change these later as i was just experimenting.
1click on the blue button to make it world and go in the middle
2you can click on the cube to make it turn to scale
3then scale in for the first extrude
4hold g to redo the move you just did again then extrude down
looks more drum like now don't it :)
